Underground Storage Tanks (BUSTR)
The Bureau of Underground Storage Tank Regulations (BUSTR) regulates the safe operation of underground storage tanks (USTs) containing petroleum (and hazardous substances) and supervises the appropriate investigation and cleanup of suspected and confirmed releases from such tanks to protect human health and preserve the environment for the citizens of Ohio. BUSTR leadership and staff conduct inspections, educate underground storage tank owners and operators, and enforce state laws in compliance with federal regulations and guidelines.
Note: Some tanks are not regulated by BUSTR. Contact your local fire department if you are seeking information about residential heating oil tanks or propane tanks or any types of above ground tanks containing flammable or combustible liquids. If your local fire department is unable to assist you, contact the Code Enforcement Bureau.
Note: BUSTR and PUSTRCB are different agencies. The Petroleum Underground Storage Tank Release Compensation Board (PUSTRCB) handles reimbursement for clean-ups. PUSTRCB may be reached at (614) 752-8963 or at www.petroboard.org.
